This is a nice tiny film that seems to be mostly forgotten by Disney fans or fans of Mr. Van Dyke. That’s too terrible, because the film is lots of fun, and gives Dick Van Dyke burly range to showcase his physical comedy skills.

Also on hand are Slim Pickens, Henry Silva, and Jack Elam. Dorothy Provine (”That Darn Cat!”) plays art instructor and like interest Sally Inwood.

On a side notice, the director of the film, Jerry Paris, is probably best known as Occupy and Laura Petrie’s next door neighbor on “The Dick Van Dyke Indicate”. Jerry cameos at the very kill.

This is colossal small film, but I have to knock off one star simply because Disney was too cheap to include a commentary track with surviving cast members.

Well, in the hit and miss world of Disney live action DVD releases, it looks like we lucked out on this one. The ever so king of physical comedy, Dick Van Dyke, is presented here in this savory comedy in its unique aspect ratio of 1.75:1. As one viewer stated, buying Disney live action DVD’s is like rolling dice. Looks like we have a winner on this one. Van Dyke scores a hit with his performance along with a exquisite befriend cast of quality actors; Edward G. Robinson, Dorothy Provine, Jack Elam, Henry Silva and Slim Pickens along with several recognizable character actors.

This DVD one not to be missed. But maintain boycotting the “Gloomy Bearded” releases and reward Disney when they bow to the wishes of the consumer.

at first, I was skeptical bout this release. having only seen Greg when he was roasting someone. but after watching this dvd. I was relieved to look that Greg Girado has a presence on stage. I’m not going to give out any jokes because that would impartial be mean. but check it out. you will laugh your ass off.

He skillfully tricks you into believing he’s fair your average comedian whose performance is ridden with cliche narratives of the American cultural landscape. But you’ll soon catch you’ve been fooled. I pick up the more aware a comedian, the better he is. He must pick risks with the audience. Sometimes he must trust that his audience is not vanilla but again we’re not sick pervs either. With awareness of this, Giraldo is able to become several titanic comedians at once with material that is shameful (Stanhope) and political (Maher, Stewart) . He also does numerous pieces that accomplish fun of our expend of language, reminiscent of the unhurried Carlin. Nevertheless Giraldo is not objective a mish-mesh of other comedians, he masterly weaves everything in a special scheme. Each joke is not random, he’s telling a chronicle that hopefully should vibrate with the younger generations.

There is a reason why the novel DAY THE EARTH STOOD Unruffled (1951) is a classic and the remake (2008) is not. The FX of 1951 were minimal, but the emphasis on area, acting, allegory, and scripting combined (as they so rarely do) to compose a film that is watchable even after many viewings. Where Keanu Reeves sleepwalks through his role as Klaatu, Michael Rennie invests his with a riveting performance as a pseudo-human who slowly and naturally learns what it means to be human. Hugh Marlowe in the fresh is totally believable as the weasly admire interest for Patricia Neal. Marlowe’s sliminess paired off well with Rennie’s saintliness. In the remake, there is no one, except perhaps in a collective sense, who can distract the audience long enough to search for Reeves as anything more than a mobile pained automaton who is only slightly more racy than Gort.

Rennie causes the earth to stand mild in a manner that emhasizes his godlike powers. His assumed name of Carpenter further allies himself as one who must suffer, die, and be reborn himself so as to place humanity from itself. Unless the audience manages to care about the lead (it does with Rennie but not with Reeves), then the director has no station to go but with FX. And for the umpteenth time, the revised version of TDTESS proves that the lack of acting and scripting cannot elevate a film to the point that FX can obtain.

I’ve been beaten to the punch by a lot of really blooming, insightful reviews. I’ll only add that, like so many movies we seem to stare today, this is one that could have been so noteworthy better.

It is poorly paced, and miserably directed, with such an imbalance of emphasis between Klaatu’s heavy-hearted, planet-wide mission, and the irritating, recurrent focus on the “cute kid” character (Jaden Smith) who becomes as welcome in the memoir as an insect at a picnic.

Jennifer Connelly is wholly amazing as a “world class” super-scientist, but at least the director resisted the temptation to beget some smarmy love-affair concoction between she and Klaatu. Given how wearisome the rest of the sage was, I was fearful that he might resort to such a technique to breathe life into this otherwise prosaic rendering of the new science fiction classic.

The special effects… well, yes, they were superb. It’s 2009. The special effects always ought to be obedient. But as we’ve all known for a long time, safe special effects do not necessarily form a estimable movie.

The movie also has one of the series most pleasing women with the enthralling Carole Bouquet and this particular Bond fan had a big crush on Lynn Holly Johnson who portrayed the chipper Bibi Dahl. Add these elements together and spot it against the backdrop of the Italian Alps and the Adriatic and you have one of the best entries in the series.

THE DVD

This DVD was one of the first wave of the newly refurbished Bond DVDs (most had previously been released in the snapper cases) . Arriving in stores in Oct. 1999 I rapid snatched them up and devoured them.

Whereas the later two sets all had DVDs with two documentaries on them this one has unprejudiced the one on the Making of the movie. For Bond fans this is a accurate treat because we catch to leer current on camera interviews with the likes of Rick Sylvestor, Topol and Lynn Holly Johnson. Narrated by Patrick MacNee it’s both breezy and appealing.

With only the one documentary and the standard selectioon of trailers, music and radio spots, we do have two audio commentaries (rather than the one that appeared in the later sets) . Unfortunately these are the spliced together kind which means that often what the interviewees are talking about is not relevant to what is playing out on hide. Whereas this means we accumulate a lot of information it does tend to score a bit dry and I would have preferred a scene specific track with participants sitting together in a studio discussing the movie as it plays.

Still…this is a tall movie and the packaging isn’t too shabby. For the time (tedious 1999) these DVDs were viewed as on-top as far as special features go because at that time most movies being released were bare-bones editions.

Highly recommended.

UPDATE- It should be celebrated that there is a rerelease of this movie coming up on DVD which will feature a newly recorded scene specific audio commentary by Bond actor Roger Moore. So, it may well be worth holding off on a capture until these Ultimate Editions are released towards the raze of 2006.

I was extremely skeptical when I heard about the proposed prequel to the greatest television science fiction saga of this generation. Attempting to cash in on the success of Battlestar Galactica so soon after the series ended seemed like a losing proposition doomed to mar an extraordinary franchise. Well, deem those fears alleviated. The first taste of “Caprica” is absolutely astonishing. Though this recount has many strong points, including a grand position, well-behaved scripting and ample acting, it has a few flaws that warrant a four-star rating rather than a five-star, in my belief. First is the pacing. At times, the movie drags in places where it seems as if the writer wasn’t definite what to do next. Though it quick recovers from these moments, they calm occur enough to bring an impatient disclose or two.

Some of the cinematography is lacking as well, speaking characters are slightly blocked or transitions a bit questionable. He’s laughable, dramatic and intense, all while being taped to a chair for most of the movie. Other essential performances are Dennis Leary, who plays Walken’s just hand man in classic Leary style, and Jay Moore as the hard nosed, stubborn leader of the preps. The film has a very independent feel to it and is gritty at some points. While feeling this draw, however, it does not feel un-professional ever. Basically, if you want a humorous film with grand performances from gargantuan actors, a safe area (which is often scarce nowadays), and a cheap heed …!!!, you have no excuse not to choose Suicide Kings.

On Iriomote Island, Sakaki’s first step towards apt happiness is realized when she meets a miniature Iriomote mountain kitten that allows her to pat it and carry it during their sail. The farewell is painful to Sakaki as she looks attend, tears streaming from her face. However, one scene from the manga I wish had been spicy is where the comical Osaka throws sea cucumbers at Chiyo and Yomi. Tomo makes a pest of herself holding out souvenirs and repeating their names before Yomi tells her to shut up.

The final summer vacation at Chiyo’s position turns out to be an entrance exam gape time. And this time, Kaorin gets to go after having to go with her astronomy club camp in Discs 1 and 3. Yet Ms. Kurosawa suffers a major blow when she is unable to wait on Kagura with a math examine, to which Yukari demonstrates her spend of English to reveal her superiority. Kurosawa is so humiliated, she is drawn as white with a mere outline. Yet her rewarding side is there. So impressed is she with Chiyo doing morning radio exercises, she gives her a note book with a cute bunny note for each day, which leads to Sakaki joining Chiyo so she can collect a heed. But Osaka trying to wake up Yukari by pounding a frying pan is a dramatic highlight, only she picks up a different implement by mistake. (Hint, can anyone say Ginsu? ) Fortunately, she never uses it, but it definitely took some years off Yukari when she sees it. Osaka also makes some amusing and risqué remarks about Kagura’s super-tanned complexion.

However, the genuine downer is the final sports fest. With the winning athletes Kagura and Sakaki on her side, one would reflect Miss Yukari would be confident of winning, but like Richard Nixon, her lust for winning overrides her sense of ethics. Osaka gets to compete in the bread eating contest. Although she loses, the cute smile of hers as she eats the melon bread is precious. Chiyo demonstrates obliging sportsmanship when she says the sports fest was fun no matter what. Where both Kagura and Tomo can fetch rowdy, the incompatibility between the two are seen when they are horsing around and knock down a tent Yomi and Chiyo are setting up. Kagura becomes teary-eyed and contrite, even wondering to herself, “Why am I always so boorish? ” She makes amends by offering to reset the tent. Chiyo is forgiving as always and offers to serve her reset the tent succor up. As for Tomo, well…

Clearly, the series was winding down, and some of the material is unrelated incidental skits, some of which are laughable, such as the weight-conscious Yomi getting inflamed at Kagura and Osaka because the faded can eat as powerful as she can without gaining weight, the latter because she gets elephantine after eating a dinky part. Others which are filler, such as Tomo’s wanting to join Interpol. But Chiyo is detached cute, Yomi peaceful has it together, Osaka detached loopy, Tomo composed rowdy, Kagura level-headed athletic, and Sakaki unexcited the gentle soul.

Volume 5: Seniors continues one of the funniest and greatest anime of all time. As the dvd opens the girls are starting their last year of high school before they disappear on to their maintain seperate lives. There’s one snag though, Kaorin is do into the homeroom of the perverted Mr. Kimura who begins to remove a creepy interest in her.

After that, it’s on to the school slither to Okinawa and a weekend of scuba diving, powerboat cruising, and the visiting of ragged temples. The highlight objective might be Sakaki’s encounter with the rarely seen and endangered iriomote cat. Will she finally be able to pet a cat without it biting her hand off?

Episode 22 involves the annual vacation at Chiyo-chan’s summer beach home. For the first time, Kaorin is along for the journey, but will she survive one of this volume’s funniest moments when the Yukari-mobile shows up.

Episode 23 concerns the annual sportsfest and Yukari’s constant obsession to defeat her best friend, Minamo. Having Kagura and Sakaki on your team can’t pain your chances, but Yukari’s personal involvement in the baton relay might unprejudiced ruin their chances of first location.

I appreciate this point to. You really care about the characters and advance to fancy them over the course of the anime. The actors are first rate. The best thing about this series is that it is so warmhearted in its humor. All of the laughs are sportive. Beneath its exterior is a gentle unfortunate, in the sense that this is their last year together. It will fabricate me sunless to notice it waste in the next volume, but this series really is something you’ll love for a lifetime. Seize it!

The usual extras are here with a reversible camouflage with a ton of informative info about the volume. Also comes with a pin of Chiyo-Chan’s dad, production sketches, and opening/closings. One thing I wish they would have effect on the volumes would’ve been some interviews with the Japanese cast and crew.

If you liked this series I would recommend the manga, available now in 4 volumes.

“Wanted” is a mile-a-second action relate that never lets up. Wesley Gibson (James McAvoy) suddenly finds that his life as an ordinary office worker is over. A splendid woman, Fox (Angelina Jolie), crashes into his life and introduces him to the Fraternity, a secret society of assassins led by the mysterious Sloan (Morgan Freeman) . Wesley is informed that his long-lost father was murdered while working for the Fraternity and Wes has been chosen to target the rogue member who did it. Before he can complete his assignment, he must first relate the black secrets slack the Fraternity to understand why he was selected and how he figures in its plans.

The main attraction of “Wanted” is the fantastic exhaust of CGI special effects, from glass panes shattering as bodies cruise through them to bullets redirecting their trajectory in mid-propulsion. Jolie manages to gape as comfortable in action flicks as in serious dramas like the unusual “Changeling.” She is quite the action babe and easy on the search for. McAvoy, who showed his acting chops in “The Last King of Scotland” and “Atonement” seems an strange fit for “Wanted.” He looks as if he’s doing this one to pay for the novel swimming pool. He’s radiant in the early scenes as a drone-like worker lost in a spacious company, but his transformation into this almost-indestructible neat assassin is harder to earn. Bonus extras on this two-disc DVD include an extended scene; behind-the-scenes featurettes on the film’s stunts, visual effects, and origins in the graphic novel; and a making-of documentary.

I’m surprised at the number of awful reviews for this film. I have to admit that I picked it up with little expectations, but once into it, I found it to be a bloody, irresistible ride—for what it is, that is.

This film was spectacular in Blu-ray, appearing almost 3-D, at times. The CGI and audio were equally adrenaline pumping and, although I’m not usually into blood-fest, action films, this one became addictive.

Yeah, the position was puny, but I found a mammoth deal of enjoyment watching James McAvoy morph from a passive, introverted, office cube-jockey, into a man. One who learned to close saying, ‘I’m sorry,’ for honest about everything. I did collect myself mentally repeating, ‘wax on, wax off,’ during some of his lethality training, with misfortune taking his transformation seriously .

Morgan Freeman has been a large addition to so many films, but he often tends to arrive across with the same acting formula. His abilities were stretched, with this atypical character. Amazingly, he can actually be a convincing ‘bad guy.’ Who knew!

Angelina Jolie’s role was a piece-of-cake for her. She rarely had any dialogue. She was basically eye-candy, for the guys. But, her sultry, sexy, witchy-eyed attributes were perfect for this killing-machine, character. Hmm, I’m shocked of her! And, she does angst SO well with those pouty lips, doesn’t she.

So, if you idea this movie with casual expectations and are willing to allow yourself the enjoyment of pure escapism and bloody mayhem, I assume you will devour this movie. Impartial don’t have too many espressos before watching. You could create a cardiac arrhythmia .

Well, I reviewed seasons 1 & 2 so here goes. “Slayers Try” is typically viewed as the weakest of the three seasons. This is almost certainly fair, but it’s unruffled Slayers, which is to say it’s awesome. If you’re a enormous Lina Inverse fan then believe this yet another must-buy. If you’re not; well, this season won’t change your mind. The yarn is one that spans the entire season rather than being broken up into smaller arcs as previous seasons were and many supporting characters are left in the dust as our critical heroes recede to parts unknown for this adventure, but the goofy character-driven humor and sage world-in-the-balance confrontations that are the series’ calling card are here with bells on. It’s slightly flawed, but it’s tranquil a must in my book.

The storyline this time out begins with the usual fateful meetings of our four heroes; Lina, Amelia, Gourry, and Zelgadis. They are hastily swept up in battle as a dragon attacks the city and wind up stranded at sea. The dragon in interrogate turns out to be the newest member of team Inverse: the dragon priestess Filia, sent to glean Lina for a task of grave importance. This storyline, while occasionally poorly paced, turns out to be quite deep as Lina and company become pawns in a massive, multi-faction feud that spans dimensions and seems to have no suitable or noxious side. The notable villain is a demon dragon named Gaav who turns out to be quite the tragic figure out to avenge the genocide of his people. This is some ravishing deep fare for an anime that prides itself on characters who behave like savages around food and like to blow stuff up. Xellos makes his return with aplomb, but this time he’s no friend to Lina’s cause. His dwelling as a demon puts him in philosophize conflict with Filia as dragons and monsters are natural enemies. The indicate uses this arrangement amusingly to instigate a potential romance (methinks the lady doth roar too distinguished) between the two mutual antagonists.

“Slayers Try” suffers from a definitive lack of the adorable Sylphiel, but Filia really filled the gap for me. Her prim and splendid ways invent for comedy gold as she hasn’t quite mastered her human perform and often sprouts a tail when surprised, thus lifting up her robe and well…you procure the portray. This awkwardness is milked for further amusement by giving Lina’s newest team member an oversized mace and an equally oversized temper with which to spend it. Plus, she can turn into a dragon (the bow on her tail is adorable) ; objective not when anyone’s looking because, naturally, she loses her clothes in the process and she’s a very horrified girl.

As I stated before, there are some pacing problems as will happen with series that don’t divide the larger stories into smaller ones. This season is broken up only by a flurry of episodes where the team is fragmented and each have a series of moronic standalone adventures. There is some grand stuff there, but the one-offs were spread out more evenly and didn’t interfere with the larger plots in past seasons while these impartial don’t fit. Even Lina -always the self-referencing type- at one point observes that maybe it’s time to end with the humorous stuff and salvage down to business. The climax impresses, but is again broken up with some inappropriately-timed and redundant humor which causes Filia this time to admonish the writers..err characters to cessation screwing around. This self-aware humor helps build for me what brought “Slayers Try” down a notch for some.

All-in-all, chalk this one up as another winner. This unusual site, like the others, is priced upright and is remastered for your viewing pleasure. That doesn’t mean you should double-dip because, personally, I wish they’d unbiased set out a higher quality product to launch with and close torturing we diehard fans with this re-release nonsense. But this review is for the novel Slayers fan and if you don’t have this series yet, now is the time. This is among my approved enthralling comedy series of all time and I can’t recommend all three seasons enough to fantasy anime fans.

4 1/2 stars rounded up to speed the wrath of the expansive Lina Inverse!

Yup, they’re encourage — hot-tempered sorceress Lina, sword-swinging dunce Gourry, stone-skinned chimera Zelgadis, and justice-obsessed princess Amelia.

And while it’s not quite the sparkling bound that the previous seasons were, the third season “Slayers Try” is aloof a solid portion of work, filled with traditional feuds, otherworldly weapons, revenge, a tea-drinking dragon, and a devastating threat from another universe.

With the Monster race’s barrier removed from the places we know, the gang reunites at a harbor where a coalition of kings — led by Prince Phil — are sending off an expedition into the Outer World. Lina and Gourry are there to meet Filia, a uncommon young woman who claims to have a mission for them. Then a Golden Dragon attacks, and Lina inadvertantly devastates the fast and the harbor with her Dragonslave.

Set adrift on an abandoned ship, Lina and her pals destroy up floating to the Outer World, where they encounter Filia (who is the Golden Dragon) once again. Eventually Filia reveals why she has done all this — a prophecy foretelling a unpleasant wretchedness that may demolish the world, which only Lina’s sister (or, if she’s not available, Lina) can conclude. Unfortunately the gang also have a fresh enemy — the vengeance-maddened Monster Valgaav, and a mysterious dim creature who wants Gourry’s Sword of Light.

But after some horrible obstacles, Lina discovers the lawful intent of Valgaav’s unusual master — to slay the Gloomy Lord Darkstar (yeah, humorous name), using five weapons including the Sword of Light. When a clash with Valgaav goes horribly scandalous, Lina and her friends extinguish up scattered across the continent, with only a short time to end the insane Shadowy Lord from invading their world. And finding the last of the weapons to end Darkstar will hold them deep into the bloody past of the Golden Dragons…

“Slayers Try” doesn’t quite procure the spectacular heights of the previous two seasons, unbiased because the Colossal Awful Threat To The Universe is a bit cheesier. But otherwise it’s a solid adventure for Lina and her puny gang, with two overarcing storylines — the first half is all about finding out Valgaav’s dwelling and the reason his master wants the Sword of Light, while the second is about dealing with the scare that is trying to arrive into the Linaverse.

In the meantime, it has a complex and twisting storyline, elephantine of unfamiliar quests for incandescent weapons and some Romeo-and-Juliet sidetrips. But this season also has a heavy dose of tragedy, mostly centering on the bloody genocide of the aged Venerable Dragons, and the dismay Filia feels when she finds out what happened. Their meander takes them through sun-baked villages, magic libraries, veteran snow-covered citadels, a mountain that looks like a pile of something obnoxious, a pair of eternally warring cities, and a series of islands with very odd inhabitants.

And of course, there’s humor. Lots of it. Aside from Xellos and Filia bickering like pros (”Ohhhh, I meant DRAGON, not person”), it has the usual bizarre scenarios and hilarious dialogue (”BIRD! ROAST CHICKEN!” a starving Lina shrieks as she tries to pluck a seagull) . And in the middle of the season, we rep a string of episodes that are pure hilarity — skittish jars, a forbidden romance between a man and a fish, and Amelia and Gourry temporary becoming “Warriors of Justice” alongside some decayed mature heroes in amusing costumes.

The absolute highlight? A surreal Lewis-Carroll-style episode in which a befuddled Lina stumbles through a outlandish world of fiestas, hostile penguins (”Don’t interrupt our funeral!”), marionettes and a smarmy talking pig.

The “Slayers” characters feel like a foursome of faded, comfortable shoes — Lina is mopish and inclined to Dragonslave whenever possible, but turns out to be deadly haunted of her sister (to the point of constructing a pyramid to screen inside) . Gourry is a lovable clunkhead, but Amelia and Zelgaids have both loosened up a itsy-bitsy — he’s mellowed and more honorable, and while Amelia unruffled poses and talks about Justice, she’s also willing to slip a dinky fun at it (the whole “warriors of Justice” episode) .

And Xellos provides plenty of fun when he’s bickering with Filia, even as he reminds us that he’s an amoral Monster who wouldn’t have a qualm about betraying Lina and Co. Filia herself is a likable character — an anxiety-ridden priestess with a care for of tea parties and antique jars, and a deep hatred of Monsters. But her character becomes worthy deeper when she discovers the awful past actions of the Golden Dragons.

“Slayers Try” is a solid third season for the Slayers gang, with a slam-bang Threat To The Universe and plenty of putrid comical relief. Not quite the brilliance of seasons past, but level-headed obedient.
